Eligibility Criteria: A doctoral degree obtained in the last three years. Age less than 35 years at the closing date for applications.
Requirements: A full curriculum vitae, including a list of publications. A proposal, written jointly with a chosen supervisor who is a member of the academic staff of the University, for a research programme to be carried out at the University. This proposal will be evaluated on the basis of peer review for its excellence. The proposal should state how the programme fits in with existing research activities in the School/Faculty, and how the applicant will interact with other researchers and research students. It should also state how the results would be disseminated. Fellowship are awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicants academic achievements, as well as the quality of the proposed programme and its potential for enhancing general research activity in the host School. The applicant will engage in postdoctoral research study under the supervision of the member of staff who participated in the preparation of the proposal. Renewal for the second year will depend on a satisfactory report from the supervisor and outputs in the form of journal articles, etc. A certificate of completion of the Fellowship will be issued listing the academic achievements and stating the period of time spent at the University. The fellowship consists of a stipend of R120 000 for the full academic year, beginning early in 2009, renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory progress.
